Joy Was Never the Reward. It's the Doorway.
There's a story most of us have been told our whole lives, so quietly and so consistently that we never thought to question it. It goes something like this: more is what you get once you've earned it. Once you've worked hard enough, fixed enough, proven yourself enough. Once the conditions are finally right.
I believed that story for a long time too. And then this season, almost by accident, I found the doorway out of it.
I did less this season than I have in years. Barely worked. Let myself rest more than I let myself produce. Said yes to enjoying things instead of earning them first. By every rule I used to live by, that should have been a lean season. Instead, it was one of the most abundant stretches I've had in a long time. Not despite the ease. Because of it.
Here's what I've been learning, and it changes everything once you actually let it land: Joy isn't a feeling that sits on top of a good life once you've built one. It's a frequency. And most of us were never taught how to access it, we were taught to chase it. Wait for it. Earn it after the fact.
The chasing keeps you in a state of lack even when you get the thing you were chasing. You get the promotion and you're already bracing for the next one you don't have yet. You hit the goal and you're already scanning for the gap. That's not a personal failing. It's just what chasing does. It keeps the goalpost moving so there's always a reason to feel like you're not there yet.
Enoughness is a completely different posture. And I want to be clear, because this gets misunderstood constantly: enoughness is not passive, and it is not settling. It is presence. It's looking at your actual life, the coffee warming your hands, the body that's breathing without you having to remind it to, the fact that you woke up today with another chance to create something, and letting that register as real. As sufficient. As already, right now, enough.
That's the frequency shift. Not get more so you can finally feel good. Feel good, right here, and watch what that opens.
I know how that sounds. It sounds too simple to be a real strategy. We've been so conditioned to believe that the harder something is, the more legitimate it must be, that when someone tells you the doorway to abundance is just noticing what's already here, your brain wants to argue with it. Mine did too, for years.
But Joy was never supposed to be the reward waiting for you at the end of the hustle. It's the doorway you walk through first.
So here's what I'd love for you to sit with. Where in your life are you still waiting for enough before you let yourself feel good? What would it look like to let today, exactly as it is, register as sufficient? Not because you've stopped growing or wanting more. Because you finally let yourself see what you already have the whole time you were reaching past it.
You don't need me to hand you the answer. You already know what your version of enoughness looks like. You've probably known for a while.
If you want a place to keep practising this, the Joy Nest is always open. It's not a program to complete or a fix to apply, it's simply a community of people learning to make Joy a daily practice instead of a distant reward. Come as you are.
