How to Show Up for Those You Love Without Leaving Yourself Behind

What Empowered Service has taught me about Joy Leadership

There's a particular kind of tired that can come from being a high achiever with a caring heart.

The work that lights you up. The people who count on you. The family member who needs you a little more right now. The commitments you've made and the beautiful opportunities you've said yes to because every single one of them matters.

None of it is wrong. In fact, so much of it can be wonderful. But it can also be a lot to hold.

And somewhere between caring deeply, showing up, and doing our best, it becomes surprisingly easy to leave ourselves out of the equation.

A season of so much

I've been walking through a season like this myself.

It's been filled with beautiful stages, meaningful retreats, extraordinary people, and opportunities I've dreamed about for years. I've been doing work that lights me up, and I feel incredibly grateful for all of it.

Alongside those experiences, I've also been walking with someone in my family through a medical journey. The appointments, the phone calls, the waiting, and the tenderness of loving someone through something you can't simply fix.

And I've noticed how quickly an old pattern can start knocking at the door.

The old version of me knew exactly what to do in a season like this. Push through, hold everything together, show up for everyone, and put myself last.

I was really good at it, too.

But eventually, that way of living would catch up with me. I'd find myself exhausted, disconnected, and sometimes quietly resentful, wondering why even the beautiful things in my life didn't feel as good as I knew they could.

This time, I'm choosing to practice something different.

Empowered Service: Giving without disappearing

I've been exploring something I'm calling Empowered Service.

It's the practice of showing up for the people and things we care about without sacrificing ourselves in the process. It's learning to contribute from a place of greater awareness, intention, and nourishment instead of continually giving from depletion.

And it begins with a question:

What if caring deeply for others didn't require us to leave ourselves behind?

For me, Empowered Service isn't about doing less for the sake of doing less or pretending that the people we love don't sometimes need a great deal from us.

It's about remembering that we're part of the equation too.

When life feels tender or overwhelming, it can be tempting to escape into work, achievement, shopping, scrolling, food, wine, or whatever temporarily helps us avoid feeling what's really there.

I know that pattern well.

But I'm learning that honouring myself means being willing to stay connected to what I'm experiencing, even when it's uncomfortable, and then choosing how I want to care for myself through it.

Sometimes that looks like saying no to another commitment so I can be with my family. Sometimes it's letting myself cry in the car instead of holding it together for one more hour, or getting outside for a walk even when my to-do list is calling.

Other times it's asking for help and actually allowing myself to receive it.

These aren't always grand gestures. They're small choices that remind me my needs, feelings, and well-being matter, too.

And I've come to believe that this is part of what makes sustainable, meaningful service possible.

You are the leader of your own life

This brings me to something I care deeply about: Joy Leadership.

I don't believe leadership begins with a job title, a corner office, or a team reporting to you. I believe it begins with how you lead yourself.

Joy Leadership is the conscious practice of honouring how you truly feel and leading yourself and your life in alignment with what matters most to you.

Whether you're running a company, raising a family, caring for an aging parent, navigating retirement, or moving through the beautiful messiness of being human, you're leading your life every day.

You're leading through your choices, your boundaries, your energy and the way you respond to what's happening around and within you.

And here's something I keep coming back to:

Your Joy requires your leadership.

It doesn't mean every day will feel wonderful or that we'll always have the capacity to do everything we want.

You can feel heartbroken and still honour yourself. You can be worried about someone you love and still make space for your own needs. You can be incredibly grateful for your opportunities and recognize that something needs to change.

Joy Leadership is about staying connected to yourself through all of it.

Overflow is a practice, not a destination

I used to think that if I could just get everything organized, complete my to-do list I'd finally have the peace and space to focus on myself.

Turns out it works the opposite way…

There will be busy seasons, unexpected challenges, beautiful opportunities and people who need us. The invitation is to learn how to care for ourselves while we're living our lives, rather than waiting until everything settles down.

And sometimes we won't have a full cup to give from. That's part of being human, too.

Empowered Service isn't another standard we have to meet perfectly. It's a practice of noticing when we're running low, honouring what we need and making small choices that help us stay connected to ourselves.

Because the world doesn't need a more exhausted version of you.

It needs the real you. Present, grounded and connected to what matters most to you. Joy is not a destination. Joy is the result of living in alignment with how you most want to feel. So how do you want to feel and what does it require of you?

A little reflection for your week

If you're in a full season right now, I'd love to invite you to sit with these questions:

  • Where am I giving from overflow, and where am I giving from empty?
  • What is one small thing my body, heart, or spirit is asking for this week?
  • How do I want to feel?
  • What does it require of me?

You don't have to figure it all out today. You can begin with one honest answer and one small, loving choice.

Because you are the leader of your own life.

And your Joy matters most.
